In the first semester emphasis was put on learning the phonemes of English and transcribing individual lexical items. The main aims of this introductory stage of your Sounds of English course were to equip you with a basic understanding of the sound system, so that you would be able to deal with more complex transcription exercises in this second semester.

Transcribing text requires you to bring together a series of inter-connected skills and your final exam will be a test of your level of preparation of these core aspects of any study of phonetics. It is clearly more challenging to transcribe from graphic form to phonetic rather than in the opposite direction, but you should aim to feel confident when moving backwards and forwards between both forms. During this semester you should be aiming to develop your understanding of the following:

 1.      graphic-phonetic relationship

2.      word-stress

3.      sentence stress

4.      weak forms

5.      linking

These characteristics of connected speech form the basis of your second semester syllabus. It is only through regular transcription practice will you be able to develop your transcription skills and feel confident dealing with the challenges of transcribing text. It is clear that through your study of transcription you will develop your knowledge of how language operates and this will undoubtedly have a positive effect on your own production of the Sounds of English.
