1. Welcome
1. Listen to the recording of the Welcome message. Pause and repeat parts of the sentences, paying attention to both word stress and sentence stress and also my use of intonation. Consider the speed of my delivery and the way I pause at certain moments in the text. Reflect on voice control and volume. It should already be clear to you that even with a brief spoken text of this type there is a LOT to explore.
2. When you have practised individual sections of the text several times, play the whole recording again and read the text along with me.
2. Transcribing Text
Transcribing text
In the first semester emphasis was put on learning the phonemes of English and transcribing individual lexical items. The main aims of this introductory stage of your Sounds of English course were to equip you with a basic understanding of the sound system, so that you would be able to deal with more complex transcription exercises in this second semester.
Transcribing text requires you to bring together a series of inter-connected skills and your final exam will be a test of your level of preparation of these core aspects of any study of phonetics. It is clearly more challenging to transcribe from graphic form to phonetic rather than in the opposite direction, but you should aim to feel confident when moving backwards and forwards between both forms. During this semester you should be aiming to develop your understanding of the following:
1. graphic-phonetic relationship
2. word-stress
3. sentence stress
4. weak forms
5. linking
